New York City BANS the Sale of Foie Gras! [by Jackie Day]

It’s a great day for ducks and geese who are horrifically force fed to engorge their livers just to produce a fatty, cholesterol-laden spread we can all do without.

New York City just passed Int 1378-2019, a local law which amends “the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to banning the sale or provision of certain force-fed poultry products.” The bill now goes to NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio for signature.

This bill prohibits retail food establishments or food service establishments from storing, maintaining, selling, or offering to sell force-fed products or food containing a force-fed product. The bill creates a rebuttable presumption that any item with a label or listed on the menu as “foie gras” is the product of force-feeding.

Violators will be subject to one year of jail time and a fine of $1,000.

For those who don’t know, Foie Gras means “fatty liver” in french – and it’s produced by jamming tubes down ducks’ necks and force feeding them until their livers expand many times larger than they should be.

Have you ever had a little pimple on your face that expands? It’s painful.  Imagine having someone blow one of your internal organs up…. because, well, someone wants slit your throat, take out your liver and smash it up for a pâté.

What year is it again? Feels like I’m writing about sixteenth century torture at the Tower of London.

Thank you, New York! And, California, too, where it’s already illegal to sell foie gras.  May the entire country – and world – follow your compassionate lead!
