Is California About To Ban The Sale of ALL Cosmetics Tested On Animals?

Looks promising! A bill to prohibit the sale of cosmetics tested on animals was just introduced in the California State Senate! The California Cruelty-Free Cosmetics Act (SB 1249) was introduced by Senator Cathleen Galgiani (D-Stockton) and comes on the heels of Hawaii introducing a similar bill last month.

The act would make it unlawful for any cosmetic manufacturer to knowingly import or sell any cosmetic, including personal hygiene products such as deodorant, shampoo, or conditioner, in California if the final product or any component of the product was tested on animals after Jan. 1, 2020.

“Inaction at the federal level compels California to lead the way in ensuring a cruelty-free cosmetics market for its citizens by barring any new ingredients or cosmetics that are tested on animals.” CA Senator Cathleen Galgiani

I wrote at length about the testing of cosmetics on animals in the chapter entitled “Because Bunnies Don’t Have Tear Ducts” in my book, The Vegan Way.  There I explain exactly how these cruel and antiquated tests “work.”

One test, called “The Draize Test” involves sticking everything from nail polish remover to oven cleaner into the eyes of bunnies (sweet little bunnies don’t have tear ducts so they can’t cry anything out).

There’s also a skin version where researchers shave the bunny’s fur, rip off several layers of skin, and slather on whatever they want to test: hair removal cream, perfume, you name it! For over 70 years “researchers” have been performing this gruesome and unnecessary test and it’s time for it to end.

There are SO many affordable, accessible cruelty-free cosmetics available these days, many of which I list in The Vegan Way; so no excuses! The cruelty must end!

You can follow the journey of this long-overdue bill on the California Legislative Information website, and I’ll be sure to continue reporting on it, too! And while we’re waiting for developments – check out my book, available in bookstores and libraries nationwide – and this handy list from PETA with a nice selection of cruelty-free products.  Times they are a changin’!
